PCC and Chief Constable cut the ribbon on new greener police station |
||
Police and Crime Commissioner Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts and Chief Constable Rachel Swann have officially opened a new energy efficient police base in Killamarsh with more space and facilities for officers to do their jobs. Funding for this new £1.6m station, part of a 15-year Estates Plan, was agreed in 2021. It is situated in the heart of the Killamarsh community in North East Derbyshire and houses the Killamarsh Safer Neighbourhood Team and associated local teams. The town’s former station was no longer fit for purpose and, even with an investment of around £400k to refurbish the ageing building, it would not have met modern day standards. The new station, which took a year to develop, offers vastly improved facilities for staff and officers with the provision of modern office space, briefing rooms, welfare facilities and specialist equipment storage. It has also been designed to meet all current energy performance requirements and features photovoltaic panels on the roof, an air source heat pump to provide all heating requirements and EV charging points for the force’s fleet of electric cars. Additionally, the station is also fully accessible and compliant with regulations benefitting from access ramps, level thresholds, and a new internal lift. Chief Constable Rachel Swann said: “The police station at Killamarsh is a much-improved space for the local Safer Neighbourhood team to work from. The previous building was not fit for purpose and needed modernisation and refurbishment. “Having a visible presence of officers in the community is hugely important for the public that we serve. It gives them confidence to see a visible representation of policing in their communities." Police and Crime Commissioner Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts said: “I was delighted to join the Chief Constable in unveiling this exciting new police station in Killamarsh. These facilities have been purposefully designed to support modern operational activity and will provide excellent working conditions for our hard-working officers and staff. “This project not only sends an important statement to our communities in Killamarsh of our commitment to maintaining a strong and visible policing presence in the heart of the town it also signifies our dedication to working greener and reducing our carbon footprint to provide a modern, sustainable and environmentally friendly estate. “Increasing the visibility of our officers is a key commitment in my Police and Crime Plan and this new station will be warmly welcomed by residents and local businesses. I am grateful to everyone involved in bringing this project to fruition. “It is vital that Safer Neighbourhood teams are based in the heart of the communities where possible. They are the eyes and ears of the local area and by providing this base it will keep them within the area that they need to be.” | ||
